For me, its been competition analysis. Run software on your competition and see who they link to. Grab some of the link juice yourself when possible. One high quality link is just as good as hundreds of small strength links. Don't spend nor waste your time building links with very little value. Your much better off going after high PR websites.

Another effective link building technique we use is "broken link building." If you have some great content on hold or can write a great article quick. Search for an authority website in your niche. Look for broken links, we always use software. Find the broken link and see if you have replacement content. If not, write up a great article. Contact the webmaster, let him/her know that she has a broken link. Let them know you have a great article to replace it. Works very good for us. Hope this helps.
