This is NOT true. The fact is that according to the W3C HTML coding standards it is good coding practice to make use of Meta tags. Meta tags are also used by some directories and Yahoo! also admited at looking at meta tags 2 years ago. It is also true that search engines like Google DO NOT care much for meta tags. Meta tags therefore does very little if any for your rankings. It is also good practice not to stuff a bunch of keywords in your meta tags but that the meta tags should be relevant to the theme and keywords targeted on the specific page it is located on.

First of all, if you look how the SERP is designed by major search engines, you will see the search results as following:
Highlighted link on a top, that's your <title> (look at your html code)
Then, goes <description> (even Google put site description on the second place).
As far as <keywords> are concern, they really lost their value due to keywords abuse by webmasters. But a lot of smaller search engines still use them.

So, I wouldn't say Google DO NOT care much about metatags. If you want to say the CONTENT has high priority, that is true, but the <title> and <description> meta tag still have a big value. Also, the other meta tags have a big value when you use them correctly (like <meta name="robots"...>, <meta http-equiv...>, etc)

So, use mata tags, they help if you apply them correctly.

I agree with your post. And Tags are important in achieving ranking but other thing like Title, keywords and quality content matters a lot.
