The search engine landscape changes continuously.
There are no gaurantees that you will keep a spot in SERPs.

Just keep on writing quality content and build related links.

Changes in rankings are happening all the time, because new websites are added to the search engines and your competitors might be working hard all the time.

In fact, no one is able to guarantee a fixed position for a long time, but using some powerful backlinks can help in getting high positions.

Actually, you can't retain your rankings 'coz it depends on SEs algorithm.. Just continue SEO and follow (SE) their algorithm...

Actally there are many reason to fall down the SERPs of a keyword.
But most important is competition. If you have more competitors for certain keyword then you have to do more work for that keyword.Try to get more back links.

Another reason you might fall is because there are different databases. Your keywords might be listed higher in some databases and lower in others. I just depends on which database is accessed when you search.
