Yahoo Directory used to be free

I know it was back in the day, but the Yahoo directory used to be free. When did they start charging for it? Wouldn't it make more sence to keep it free and make the money off advertising? They'd have a bigger directory then.

Yahoo directory started to charge for submissions a long time ago. I think, Yahoo earns more money from submissions than they do from advertising.

I wouldn't doubt it, it costs an arm and a leg to pay those guys.
