Bing and Google has a clearly explain about the indexing of website in their respective search engine but yahoo says there is yahoo site explorer, submit your site and your webpage will index . But unfortunatelly when you click yahoo site explorer the page will be some smiley.. wtf.. as few year ago they have closed up yahoo site explorer.

Almost all the sites will not be listed on all the search engines. So, back links will appear only from the sites which have indexed in the search engines.

search engine submission is not required. If your site has good links it will get indexed well even if you dont add it manualy to the search engine. Concentrate on the links.
