When did the PC hobby become which parts you can afford?

Today the hobby has changed into a willy waving thing which to myself is a total turn off.
It's all about having the best parts to show what? How successful you are.

Does anyone else not look back fondly on the days of buying the cheapest parts but spending the money saved on expensive aftermarket coolers and modding tools? That's where the fun in it was for myself. Now it's just this " Well how much do you want to spend " mentality
