Hi, I'm Craig and am new to the whole web development/seo thing. I'm developing a site for my church, and I've done as much SEO research as I could stand but there's 1000's of seo sites on here. I tried to do everything that was mentioned, but I think I might be doing more damage than good at this point. I took a liking to this site, so I figured I'd give this a shot. I was wondering what could be done to make my site more search engine friendly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums Craig. There are a lot of things you could do to help your current website get higher search engine ranking and exposure.
So to start, I would create additional navigation to your content pages within hypertext links and not JavaScript. You could add them into the footer or along the bottom of each page, using keywords within the link text to describe each page the links point to.
For instance you could create a link to your About Us page like this:
About OS Outdoors
In addition to creating links to all your other pages NOT using JS, go ahead and link all your content and sub-pages to your homepage using hypertext links.
Besides navigation elements, you could also create custom page titles for your other content pages as they appear to all be the same, except the homepage title (be descriptive).
Develop your forums and concentrate on adding content into the forum categories in order to attract new members and site visitors. Having lots of pages can help get your site found easier and more often.
Use a phpbb mod_rewrite for your forum urls to get rid of the Session Id's and make your url strings more friendly.
Keep adding content people will like and link to from other sites.
Start to build quality relevant links from other sites to yours. Web directories are a good place to start, but find any links related to yours that are willing to link to you and ask them to.
Build a site-map page so that search engines can find and index any pages, and new pages you may add to the site.
That should give you a start and some things to think about regarding basic SEO and basic site usability and functionality.

There a lot of basic things like you have started to do that will help you with search engine rankings and more traffic. The links at the bottom of your pages and the addition of a site-map will help SE bots find the info the seek faster and more efficiently.

Try to get listed in Internet Directories that are related to your niche, or that have categories that describe your site theme. This process is long and tedious sometimes, but can be very beneficial in the long run. It will help along the other techniques you are implementing as well!
Use your keywords in your link text when you submit to directories, but it's not a good idea to "stuff" keywords in. Just use different combinations of your keywords and mix it up so they are not all the same in every directory you submit to, same with your signature links and such.
You could write reviews (articles) about each "Outdoor Event" you host or take your members on, as a follow up to the event. This will also create additional pages of content that your readers would be interested in, as they are probably wondering what the events may be like if they have never gone before.
Good job on the Google Site-map! Keep it updated and Online, and link to it from all your pages like the home.
