How do you know if your site is in the Google sandbox?

If your pages are in the index but not showing up in the serps, or showing way down in the serps, then you're probably in the sandbox...

The organic search results that come up when you type a keyword into the search box....serp is short for Search Engine Results Position....I think...

At least we know, now, the sandbox is real. My web site is nowhere to be seen in search engines though I have plenty of backlinks.
What' s the best way to speed getting out of this box?

I read the sandbox is 2 to 4 month. Anyone knows the real timing ?
