Yeah, I would agree with pauloscula, monetizing a free website is very difficult as you dont have entire control over where and how to add ads...

Yes, most of them are free, but free hosting isn't all it's cooked up to be. Remember, they offer less space within their servers. Only the sub-domain name is used within the site, so obviously visitors can't easily remember it. You'll also have to deal with those annoying ads on your site, which you can't really remove because you should give credit to your host. Those ads are really distracting for anyone visiting your site.

The advantage of free hosting? With minalne prices registering their own domain and hosting is no need to train on a free hositng. For 2-3 dollars for a month, you have all the opportunity to become familiar with php, asp, mysql, joomla, wordpress, ftp, java, ajax and similar to other useful web techniques and programming languages ...
No need to waste time with free hosting, unless it comes to a blog (like blogger) or free web photo album ...

Free web hosting is good for students or practicing web designers and developers but SEO wise, these sites are not recommended because of C-class IP issues.

Using a free hosting site is great if you are still just starting. But as your site grows, you might want to invest on paid servers to give you more of that flexibility.
