Does optimisation give your website the traffic or is it links that drive in the Custom

you seem a little confused. This is perhaps massively over simplified, but think of seo like this:- On page optimisation (keywords etc) - Tells the search engines what you want to rank for.
Links (relevant natural inbound links) - Determine how highly you rank in the serps for your chosen keywords.
Like i say, massively over simplified, but it might shed a little light.

So if you optimise your page for certain keywords and then gain links for those keywords then you should be ok.
