improving new (unique) visitors and how to keep them there?

Hey everyone. I think this is actually my first post, but I stumbled upon this page about a month ago. You guys give really great help to people and I was hoping you could help me out a little bit.
I've been analyzing our new visitors vs. returning visitors and am proud to say that I have managed to increase the new visitors from 57% to 65% and have also increased the total hits from 139,000 to 200,000 as well as 1748 visits/month to 3690 visits/month. My question is how can I increase the new unique visitors to my site as well as how to keep them there (so they don't hit the back button and leave for a competitor).
I can give you guys more information about what I currently do if needed. Thanks in advance guys!
