A good search engine positioning depends on these factors-
1.Write good content for website
2.Write descriptive page titles
3.Use real headings in titles
4.Use search engine friendly urls
5.submit your site in directories,open directory and yahoo directory
6.Avoid using frames
7.Do not use black hat techniques to fool the search engines
8. Dont waste much time on meta tags
9.Article submissions and blogs

Yes absolutely these all suggestions are very important to get good search engine position.You can also do forum posting.

Nivea is right...you can also do some forum posting, social bookmarking and link exchange with related sites...
