SE and Directory submission is not that helpful.. you can get in SE's even without this two...

Many people do not submit their new websites to the search engines anymore because through links new pages are found and indexed. Powerful one way links and useful content can really be important.

Dont do search engine submission. let the search engine find your site from quality site. so submit your site to good quality directories.

Do check for the directories before you submit your links to them, you can also write articles to some articles sites with your embedded links in them.
