I read somewhere that the index page of a site isnt much taken notice of by spiders visiting the site, therefore "not" holding much weight in SE. Is that another piece of misinformation? Or should you try to optimize the index page as much as possible with content e.t.c?

i don't think index page has less weight from the bots.... what if your site only have 1 page but it's optimized well and full of informational contents? it really depends on the optimization process...

Index page is your domain page (unless you link your domain to the other page, like "default", "home" or anything else). Another words it's the first page in the root. I assume, the first thing SEs do when they look at your domain is your index page. It has a weight and it's recognizable by the spiders. Of course, you have to optimise all of your pages, but to pay special attention to the index page.
