whoa??! I believe google doesn't give weight to image alt tags.. its not frowned upon SEs...

No way can you be penalised. Alt image tags are for the visullually impaired and used to give se a theme for a page. Than some webowners spammed thier tags full of keywords so that search engines ignored them. But unless you spam, spammer, spamming, spam and actually describe the image you wont be penalised and some se give weight to it.

There is nothing wrong with having alt tags descriptions for your images
