There are plenty of sites that offer link trading services like
http://www.linkpartners.com/ for example. I think the key thing is to find quality partners that are related to your site. It's more work, but these "real links" will have more value than anything produced from a fully automated system.

I'd rather have 100 links from quality sites than 1000's of links from unrelated sites that have no quality content or are spammy in nature. Google's been cracking down on link farms and "bad neighborhoods" and linking with these may get you banned. Services or software that promise you automated links from thousands of pages give you no control over the quality of the links. And this may cause real problems for you in the long run...

Yeah, I used to use them when I first started but now I do it all naturally and have webmasters come to my site to exchange links. No more of that other crap!
