What defines a link?

You can use image link but text images are best.

I prefer to use the text links rather using images as your links because text links will help your serp rankings..

Both are links but text link are much used today because it is search engine friendly.. If you are using images as links, you need to put alt tags that describes what the image is so spiders will be able to detect it.

link is an anchor text that represents an html tag <a href> and title just like this <a href="http:/www.google.com">google</a>. Yes images can count as link and link connected to html tag also such as <a href="http:/www.google.com"><img src="img.jpg"></a>. hope it will help.
