What lenght can my URL's be?

Hello

I'd like to know if i should use a keyword phrase as a file name, or just the most significant keyword.

My main product is accounting software, so my the product page could be /accounting.(htm) or it could be /accounting-software(.htm) - sorry i'm not allowed to post full URL's yet.

Which of these would be better. They're in the root directory.

I would recommend using the keyword phrase as its better seo and accounting may be too competitive and not neccessarily any good for your target customers. Also i think you would be better off doing it as an underscore so it doesnt look like a hyphenated word to search engines and users.

Most the seo tips I've read recommend using a hyphen instead of the underscore. Apparently the bots read it as a space, but the underscore as a character. Have I got that wrong?
