SEO Backlinks to Home Page vs Keyword Pages

Assuming that the pages are internally crosslinked to each other, should you get backlinks

to all the keyword pages, or just get backlinks to the home page, or both... ? Also, how

much should you vary the anchor text of the backlinks ?

For example:

x.com/golf-resorts.html
x.com/golf-courses.html

I've had the best results by obtaining backlinks to both keyword pages and home page. If I had to choose one or the other, however, I'd say that links to your home page are more important.

I typically use four variations of my keywords in my anchor text - if I'm understanding your example correctly, it looks to be the actual links, and not the anchor text. Here's an example of how I'd vary anchor text:

Keywords: Vacation Auto Rentals San Diego

Anchor Text 1: Vacation Auto Rentals San Diego
Anchor Text 2: San Diego Vacation Auto Rentals
Anchor Text 3: Auto Rentals San Diego Vacation
Anchor Text 4: San Diego Auto Rentals Vacation

IMO it is important to have links for both, homepage and keyword optimised page. The keyword focused pages rank well for that particular keyword but then it need to have some voting backlinks confirming its value as a result page. The links to homepages are important as crawling generally starts through homepage (not necessary always).
